Did you know that Ethiopia has its own calendar system?โ
The calendar most of us are familiar with in the West is known as the Gregorian Calendar.โLike the Gregorian Calendar, Ethiopia’s calendar has 365 days in a non-leap year โ but with one major difference: it is divided into thirteen months instead of twelve.ย The first twelve months have exactly 30 days each, and the thirteenth month has the remaining five or six days.
Ethiopia’s New Year begins in September, and โ due to an alternate calculation of the date of the Annunciation of the birth of Jesus โ is dated more than seven years behind the Gregorian Calendar. That means in September of 2026, Ethiopia will celebrate the beginning of 2019.
Inside this calendar, you’ll see some of the beautiful faces and images of Ethiopia and the Yezelalem Minch ministry. Each month highlights the corresponding Ethiopian month names in Amharic, Ethiopia’s primary language. Each calendar day also displays the corresponding Ethiopian date, month, and year, as well as major public holidays in both the United States and Ethiopia.
